Autumn Catch-up

yeah, i know, i know... i have been just a little busy and well one of the things i let slide is the blog. i haven't had too many complaints, but i assume that is because everyone realizes that having a 2 year old and a new baby is hard work. well, some days it is. but on others it goes really really well.

Esme will be a whopping 5 months old tomorrow, and it has been going incredibly fast. At first she was a very stoic baby, but in the past few weeks she has become very smiley, talkative and giggly. She is very mellow and has been an easy baby- easy to get to sleep, easy to soothe, easy to cuddle. Although breastfeeding didn't work out for us, we have bonded well and she fits perfectly into our little family unit. She is anxious to sit up and is always very curious as to what is going on around her. The past few days she has begun blowing raspberries constantly and finds the spit that goes all over everything quite hysterical.

Ruby has become quite the doting bigger sister. There are constant kisses and hugs to the point that she does not want Esme to nap at all! We keep waiting for the shoe to drop and jealousy to set in, but so far we have been very lucky.

Lately Ruby has been singing and dancing all over the house, doing somersaults and practicing "ballet". She is also very into cooking in her little kitchen thanks to watching Ratatouille. She still draws quite often, and wants you to read to her all the time. She has been potty trained for the past 2 months and is enjoying being a "big girl".

This Halloween marked our first attempt at trick-or treating. The weather was quite mild, and Ruby thought it was quite great to knock on people's doors, yell at them and then be given candy. We hit a few houses in the neighbourhood and ended things up at the Grandparents' house. Thanksgiving is always a hard time for me, it is such a family oriented day and no matter how hard I try to pull it off over here, it isn't the same without the Macy's Parade, NFL and the family political 'discussions' that happen in the States.

The weather has turned foul, so we are spending more time indoors. We have been fighting off colds of one type of another for about 3 weeks, and hibernating more than I would like. Ruby has been a little moody at times, and has learned quickly what a 'Time out' is... she doesn't like them at all. Part of her moodiness is just plain being 2 years old, and some of it is because her best friend Max has moved away. We really miss him and his mom around here....

We are now getting geared up for Nana's visit, David's winter vacation, Santa and Hogmanay!

Esme's arrival

I am attempting to play catch-up. Life has been pretty darn busy what with a toddler, a newborn and visitors here. Some things have been put to the wayside as I learn to cope with the logistics of changing 2 nappies in the morning, and feeding 2 hungry babies at the same time. it is getting easier, but some things have been left undone....
Esme Siena was born on July 3rd at 2:43 pm in Edinburgh. Compared to my last birth, this one was a cakewalk! I finally got to have the birth that i dreamt of having the first time around. I think it must be the gods deciding to finally be nice to me, the last month of my pregnancy had been horrific-constant pain- so i think i had earned an easy delivery!

22 months old

june 2nd flew past us here. could be the amazing weather we have been experiencing, or it could be that things are quite hectic right now. david is working alot, i am quite uncomfortable/tired, and ruby is always on the go! not to mention we have a pretty lengthy 'to-do' list that i wrote up last month that we are trying to tick our way through before the baby arrives. there are not enough hours in a day to get everything finished, and as the days pass i realize that i am not yet ready to give birth!
ruby is doing great. no more baby babbling, she is talking in sentences and is very clear with her speech. she is also becoming a little more head-strong lately, but with david and i as her parents, this is to be expected. she is still shy and gentle with people, but she is getting to know her own mind well. luckily we have yet to get into the temper tantrums of the 2 year olds, but is there any way to avoid that? if there is, let me know so i can get started!
i am now 36 weeks pregnant, and not happy. i think this baby is going to be huge! where ruby would kick me in the rib every so often, this baby has the foot planted there 100% of the time. my mind says "4 more weeks" but my body is saying "now! get it out!" maybe a few days early would be good, i have no clue what to get David for Father's day, so maybe a brand new baby would be a good gift?

21 months!

our little chocoholic is 21 months! almost completely over the chicken pox, we are still waiting for all of the scabs to come off. unlucky for david, he contacted the pox from her and is in the midst of it! he is covered, and very uncomfortable. i would love to post a picture of just how bad it is, but he might kill me if i did. so just think worst case scenerio, and that is pretty much what he looks like.
now that ruby is healed, we are back into our regular schedule of playdates and playgroups. she is very happy to be able to socialize with her friends again, and just be out of the house/garden. she does think that she is now capable of walking everywhere, so a walk that would take about 10 minutes with her in the stroller now takes about 30! she is slow, but very good at either holding hands or holding on to the side of the stroller (that usually has a baby-doll riding in it instead of ruby). it is good practice for when the baby comes, but i will still be putting ruby and the baby in the double-buggy to get anywhere quickly.
speaking of the baby, i am now 32 weeks pregnant and getting bigger by the minute. i can't believe i have less than 2 months until my due date! incredible! i am really beginning to hate maternity clothes, and can't wait to go shopping for new clothes once this weight is off. pushing that double-buggy should help!

30 weeks and the pox

yes, it is crazy. i only have 10 more weeks to go until the baby arrives! egads! we aren't ready! we have so much to do around the house, and so little time. luckily we have loads of supplies, just no place to put them! ruby is now the occupier of 2 bedrooms as we try to move her out of the nursery into the spare room. but then the spare room is needed for when Na-Na comes to stay for 3 weeks this summer! maybe we need a bigger house....
Ruby is also on day 5 of the Chicken Pox. We are glad to get it over before the baby arrives, but hate what it is doing to our baby girl! She is being very brave, but is incredibly uncomfortable to say the least. She has an infected spot on her face, so is now on antibiotics too! And she has learned the word "itchy" really well! Thankfully we have no new spots today, so it seems we are on the downward slide. good, and boy am i glad that you only get it once!

20 months

i can't believe it! and the shocking thing is that in less than 3 months she will be a big sister. i think for what she understands, she is ready for it. i on the other hand am glad i have 3 more months of ruby being my little baby. i think we worry about the changes ahead all the time: will ruby adjust, will she resent the new baby, will it change her too much? i guess it is normal to be afraid of the unknown, but what we do know is that ruby is very loving and gentle, and really enjoys other babies she is around.
ruby talks, ALOT. i guess she takes after me in that aspect. She loves to learn new words and has a wide vocabulary, including some spanish words. I wish i were billigual so i could pass it on, but some words in spanish might get her interested in learning it in the future. she also wants to walk everywhere, which is good and bad. pushing the stroller has been causing my pregnant body some pain, but walking is slow and tedious work. we mainly walk to the park, which usually includes a stop to see if Bailey the dog is in at our neighbour's house and a few waves to everyone she sees. we also walk to papa and dee's house (her names for her scottish grandparents), but for gratch's walks we still use the stroller.
spring is slowly coming our way and we have been spending some time in the garden. ruby has a watering can and some tools, so she helps out with planting and weeding. primarily she throws the ball for gratch, and they occupy eachother while i get to work. we are hoping to get ruby a sandpit soon and maybe a mini-trampoline for when her friends come over to play.
chicken pox has been going through town like wildfire (the do not vaccinate for it here), and we thought ruby might have caught it, but no spots yet. i think she is wondering why i keep looking at her belly every few hours. luckily she thinks it is to check out her bellybutton!

19 months

our baby is getting so big! the other day i was looking back through all her flickr pics and it has gone by so fast... it seems like just yesterday she was still crawling! now she is running around the house very quickly, climbing up on everything, and saying new words everyday. people ask about her accent all the time. her accent seems to be very american right now, but i think the older she gets the more scottish she may sound. right now she is around me all day, so no wonder she sounds 100% yank!
i am about 23 weeks pregnant now, and dealing with some sciatic pain. this is new to me, and since i can't really take any decent pain killers, well i am dealing. ruby thinks i am walking way too slow, and that not getting picked up as much is a real bummer. but she doesn't mind holding my hand, so that will suffice.

florida, christmas and 17-18 months, oh my!

it has been a while since i posted, and i plan to make up for it. ruby and i spent a month in florida, with david meeting us there for the last 2 weeks. going somewhere warm in december is becoming a tradition which i call the "thaw out" and this year it was. the weather in florida was mostly in the 70s, with a few days in the 80s and even fewer in the 60s. damn, it felt good, even though it took ruby a while to get used to the heat (she was happy to run around in a diaper as much as possible).

we stayed with my parents and used that as a base to visit friends and family. with the holidays and sicknesses, we didn't get to see as many people as we had hoped. we did get to spend time with my friend's 3 month old girl which was very important for us (ruby loves babies), we went to Miami for a few days, and then attended a wedding on New Year's. Christmas was spent at my parent's with friends and family in attendance. it was a whirlwind, and here i was thinking that 1 month would be enough time! ha!

we have now been home a little over a month and things have been very good. it seems that ruby has decided to learn to talk, ALOT, and wants to know every word for every thing! her favorite books right now are ABC books, or Picture Dictionaries so that she can learn as many new words as possible. problem is that most of the words sound incredibly similar to the untrained ear, or she forgets the word and simply calls it "da-da" until she is reminded what it actually is named. She says such complex things as 'purple', 'outside' and 'stroller' but doesn't know how to say easy things like 'poo'. it is a riot!

in other news, I am pregnant with our second (and last) baby! I am due the end of June and so far things are going really well. We hope to find out the sex this week, although Ruby says it will be a boy. Ruby is very excited about being an older sister and gives the baby kisses all the time. We just hope she is this happy when reality strikes!
